Knowledge of Coltsfoot
Pervasive weed used medicinally since prehistory for coughs and respiratory dis-eases; can be smoked to draw the herb into the lungs, or used as tea, tincture, or capsules; primary use is as a suppressant for dry, irritating coughs and sore throats from all sources; expectorant (mucus thinner); respiratory congestion, wheezing, shortness of breath, whooping cough, flu, smoker’s cough, lung ailments, bronchitis, laryngitis, emphysema, silicosis, mouth irritation, asthma; used in many commercial cough syrups and remedies; soothes digestion, stomach and intestines; diuretic; antidiarrhea; may have positive effect on beneficial bacteria in the intestines and reduces harmful bacteria; use externally for skin disorders and irritations, eczema, ulcers, wounds, rashes, sores, joint pain; immune stimulant that may help increase immune resistance to dis-ease. Antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, soothing, diuretic, tonic. Often used with licorice root or wild cherry bark; generally considered safe with normal dosage and short-term use, no side effects but potentially liver toxic when overdosed or used long term; not for use by infants or during pregnancy (may be abortifacient); not for use with some high blood pressure drugs.
